I have a friend who is absent-minded and psychologically confused right now. I have no idea how to help him, and it hurts me a lot to see him struggling like this. Could you please give me some advice on how to save him?

Hawzah News Agency - Question: I have a friend who is absent-minded and psychologically confused right now. I have no idea how to help him, and it hurts me a lot to see him struggling like this. Could you please give me some advice on how to save him?

Answer:

First off, I just want to say how awesome it is to see how much you care about your friend and want to help him. Having that kind of empathy and concern is a quality that Allah absolutely loves to see in believers. To help pull your friend out of this, I suggest that you first rely on Allah and ask for His assistance, and then try the following steps:

  1. Be gentle and kind: Approach him with a lot of patience and kindness so he feels safe enough to trust you!
  2. Do some digging: Try reaching out to his relatives to figure out what his actual problem might be behind the scenes.
  3. Build trust through shared experiences: Make him feel less alone by telling him about similar conditions you’ve either helped treat or read about, and explain how people successfully got through them!
  4. Talk about faith and forgiveness: Gently explain the negative impacts of disobeying Allah and the massive benefits of obeying Him. He might be feeling deeply melancholy because of guilt over a hidden sin. If that’s the case, encourage him to repent and pray to Allah for forgiveness. Remind him of the beautiful truth: someone who repents from a sin becomes as totally pure as the moment they were born.
  5. Spark some motivation: Do your best to inspire a sense of hope, purpose, and active energy in him!
  6. Plan a getaway: Organize a fun trip with your friend group and bring him along! Try to smoothly and skillfully get him involved in the group activities and amusements to get his mind off things.
